In an attempt to activate public space, artists Sean Martindale and Eric Cheung came up with an innovative way to reuse layers of old ads on posterboards.

They cut triangular shapes deep into  the thick layers of posters, peel them back and fold them into triangular shaped pockets, using stapels to hold them in place.  Once the cones are made, Martindale and Cheung fill each pocket with soil, water it and place a plant inside.

It’s an unusual and surprising way of introducing nature to the urban environment but the planters  are very well-received  by spectators as Martindale explains on Torontoist : “No one’s complained yet, a lot of times they thank us.”
